Frequently Asked Questions

What is a high-voltage safety check and why is it essential for EVs and hybrids?
A high-voltage safety check is a rigorous inspection and isolation procedure for your vehicle’s battery and electrical systems, performed by certified technicians. It’s critical because EVs and hybrids operate at voltages (400–800V+) sufficient to cause fatal injuries without proper precautions. Our process follows HSE GS44 and HSG261 guidance and IMI TechSafe™ standards, including certified isolation, insulation resistance tests, and terminal/charger checks—minimising risk to you and protecting your warranty and insurance rights.
Is this check legally required to keep my car warranty or insurance valid?
While there is no direct legal requirement in the UK mandating a high-voltage safety check, many vehicle manufacturers and insurance providers may require an annual or pre-claim high-voltage inspection report issued by a recognised workshop using calibrated tools. Missing these checks or using unqualified garages can risk your coverage for electrical or battery-related claims. Our certificates meet current IMI TechSafe™ accreditation standards and are accepted by major UK warranty and insurance networks.
What high-voltage battery problems are most common in used EVs and hybrids?
Typical issues include capacity degradation, individual cell faults, cooling failures, water ingress, and wiring insulation breakdown. Early signs may be slower charging, reduced range, dashboard warnings, or even a “no start” condition. Regular safety checks and State of Health (SOH) diagnostics help detect and resolve these issues before they become expensive or dangerous, supporting both longevity and resale value. For more insights, see What Car? (2024) and HSE EV Safety Guidance.
How does the check prevent dangerous incidents or electrical fires?
Every step follows official HSE GS44 and NFCC EV Response protocols: circuits fully isolated, zero-voltage confirmed, lockout/tagout applied, insulation resistance tested, and thermal imaging scans run to detect heat anomalies invisible to the eye. All findings are documented, and any safety risks are flagged for urgent repair with clear guidance on next steps, reducing the risk of shock, short circuit, or fire.
Can this check increase my car’s resale value?
Yes—buyers and dealers increasingly demand certified battery health and safety documentation. A What Car? (2024) survey found verified battery reports can boost EV trade-in prices by up to 10%. Our certificates help you maximise resale value and buyer confidence by demonstrating verified electrical safety and battery performance.
Are your technicians formally recognised? What’s IMI TechSafe™ certification?
Absolutely. Every inspection is performed by an IMI TechSafe™ and HSE-qualified specialist, with full certification and calibration evidence available. IMI TechSafe™ is the UK’s officially recognised competency standard for electric vehicle safety and is required by many leasing, insurance, and manufacturer networks.
Will my car or battery be damaged during this service?
No. The process is completely non-invasive and compliant with UNECE Regulation No. 100 on EV safety. All checks follow manufacturer-approved procedures, including secure immobilisation, zero-voltage testing, and non-contact thermal imaging. The only result should be peace of mind and a detailed digital report—never any harm to your high-voltage system.
What do I need to bring for the appointment? How long does it take?
Just the vehicle and your key. Please ensure the high-voltage and 12V batteries are not completely discharged (we recommend at least 20% SOC). Most checks take around 45–60 minutes. For any further repairs or diagnostics, we’ll always provide a clear quote before proceeding.
Do you test charging equipment as well?
Yes—our inspection includes a test of the vehicle’s onboard charger and any supplied Type 2/Mode 3 charge equipment. We ensure safe operation and compliance with UNECE software and safety guidance (2023) and the IET Code of Practice for EV charging systems.
What happens if my EV or hybrid fails the safety check?
If your vehicle fails, you’ll receive a detailed digital report explaining each issue, its severity, and repair recommendations. Your insurer or finance provider will recognise this as compliance evidence, protecting you from hidden electrical risks. Please note: this report is advisory and does not replace any official DVSA MOT inspection.
