High-Voltage Battery & State of Health (SoH)

Your EV’s HV battery is tested for SoH (State of Health) — the percentage of remaining capacity versus when new. Most OEMs consider 70–80% SoH as the threshold for warranty claims (Faraday Institution, n.d.).

Average EV battery State of Health(SoH) Decline vs Mileage

This chart illustrates the typical reduction in an electric vehicle’s battery health as mileage increases.

A new EV starts with 100% capacity, but gradual chemical ageing and cycling reduce performance over time.

By 100K miles, most batteries operate at around 85% SoH, which equates to a noticeable reduction in driving range and may trigger warranty considerations.

The visual trend highlights why regular SoH checks are important for predicting lifespan, planning maintenance, and protecting warranty coverage.

We don’t stop at percentages

Our technicians check:

  • Diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs): Common early warnings include P0AA6 (HV isolation fault) and P0A0F (HV system shutdown).
  • Cell balance: Voltage spread across modules.
  • Internal resistance: Higher resistance reduces range and efficiency.
  • Isolation resistance: Detects coolant ingress or wiring degradation.

Thermal Management & Cooling Systems

Cells degrade rapidly above 40°C and lose efficiency below 0°C (Faraday Institution, n.d.). Our inspection covers:

  • Coolant levels and flow testing.
  • Leak detection using pressure checks.
  • Thermal sensor calibration.
  • BMS thermal strategy verification.

Case study: In one London taxi fleet, 3 of 20 vehicles showed reduced range traced to blocked cooling passages — detected before failures occurred.

Powertrain, Charging & Compliance

We test inverters, motors, and gear reduction units, alongside charging compliance with the UK Public Charge Point Regulations 2023 (DfT, 2024). This includes:

  • Load testing: Confirming charger delivers rated current.
  • Insulation testing: Detecting breakdown under load.
  • Handshake validation: Ensuring communication between vehicle and charger is
    fault-free.

All ECU versions are logged and compared against OEM release notes, in line with UNECE R155 (cybersecurity) and R156 (software update management) (UNECE, 2021a; UNECE, 2021b).

Brakes, Regen Systems

Regenerative braking reduces pad/disc wear by up to 90% in lab tests though DEFRA cautions results vary in real use (DEFRA, 2023; Bondorf et al., 2023).

This chart illustrates how regenerative braking becomes more effective as vehicle speed increases. regenerative braking not only improves overall efficiency but also reduces wear on friction brakes, cutting maintenance costs and extending component life.
Our service includes:

  • Brake fluid testing.
  • Friction brake wear measurement.
  • Regen system calibration via OEM software where applicable.

ADAS Sensors Misalignment

Small errors in the alignment of ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) sensors can significantly compromise vehicle safety.

Even a half degree shift can add measurable stopping distance, while a 1° misalignment typically increases braking distance by around 5%.

At 3°, the braking distance may extend by as much as 20%, meaning the vehicle could travel several extra metres before stopping in an emergency.

This visual emphasises why recalibration is essential after windscreen replacement, suspension adjustments, or collision repair, as required by Thatcham’s Insurance Industry Requirements.

ADAS calibration follows Thatcham IIR standards. Even a 1° misalignment can compromise emergency braking accuracy (Thatcham Research, 2023). We provide before/after calibration screenshots in your report for transparency.

Fleet & Commercial EV Services

  • Provide predictive analytics on SoH and brake wear.
  • Highlight underperforming vehicles.
  • Optimise charging cycles to cut electricity costs.
  • Generate bulk compliance reports for insurers and regulators.

For fleets, downtime equals lost revenue. Our fleet health checks integrate with telematics platforms to:

Case example: A delivery fleet reduced unexpected breakdowns by 22% after adopting predictive health checks over 12 months.

Safety Protocols: Beyond Basics

All technicians use:

  • IEC Class 0/1 HV insulating gloves (up to 1,000V).
  • CAT III/IV multimeters for HV testing.
  • Insulated tooling and barriers as per HSE guidelines (HSE, n.d.).

This ensures compliance and minimises risks during diagnostics.
Technicians also undergo regular OEM-accredited training to stay updated on evolving EV standards, and emergency response drills are carried out quarterly to prepare for potential HV isolation or thermal runaway events.

Reporting, Warranty & Booking

Every vehicle receives a digital health report covering:

  • SoH % and balance with historical trend data where applicable.
  • Thermal and charging system test results where applicable.
  • DTC logs and cleared codes.
  • Warranty compliance notes.

Additional features include:

  • Secure online portal with downloadable reports
  • Integration with ERP/CMMS platforms for fleet managers
  • Automated booking reminders based on mileage or time intervals

Frequently Asked Questions

What is included in an annual EV/Hybrid health check?
For EV, an annual check covers battery SoH, thermal & charging systems, brakes, regen and ADAS, with a full digital health report. For Hybrids, it also includes engine oil & filter, transmission, cooling and emissions checks.
How do I know if my EV battery needs a health check?
Most EVs will alert you through the dashboard if there’s a battery fault, but there are also early signs worth checking. If you notice reduced driving range, slower charging, unusual heat, or warning lights such as the “service battery” icon, it may be time for a health check. Routine battery diagnostics are also recommended every 12–24 months (or as per your manufacturer’s service schedule) to track State of Health (SoH) and ensure warranty compliance.
Why does my EV range vary so much in winter?
Cold temperatures affect both the battery and the vehicle. Lithium-ion batteries work less efficiently in low temperatures, which means they deliver less usable energy. At the same time, heating the cabin, demisting windows, and warming the battery itself all draw extra power. Together, this can reduce your range by 20–40% compared to summer driving. Pre-conditioning your EV while it’s still plugged in, using seat heaters instead of full cabin heating, and driving smoothly can help minimise winter range loss.
How long does the check take?
Most annual EV/Hybrid health checks take 60–90 minutes. Fleet bookings or vehicles requiring software updates may take longer, but results are usually available the same day.
Is it worth it if my car shows no warning lights?
Absolutely. Warning lights usually appear once an issue is already advanced. Annual checks track gradual changes in battery health and performance, helping you spot early signs of degradation and avoid costly repairs.
